Modern cars have safety systems. That’s a problem. Electronic control units are strictly designed for a given vehicle. Their VIN number along with immobilizer and “components control active system” protect from using second hand electronic control units; an engine simply will not start or the possibility to start a car can be blocked for good.
Fortunately, in most cases broken electronic control units can be repaired. Only in exceptional situations, when they are flooded or burnt, the driver is forced to buy new equipment. This, however, happens rarely.
Nonetheless, car manufacturers try to do their best to make repairs impossible by using various methods such as filling electronic control units with thick layers of glue or plastic or making it impossible to get inside through the casing. With non-standard electronic elements car manufacturers and producers of electronic elements enter into agreements, which monopolizes the market of electronic elements and consequently allows to dictate prices.
Luckily, there are specialists who can repair electronic control units, not only replace damaged with new ones. Of course, they need professional tools and great knowledge to do that but even though the service costs less than new electronic control unit.
